NIGERIA TARGETS AI-POWERED GLOBAL SERVICES AS DIGITAL ECONOMY STRATEGY SHIFTS

Reloaded News Desk

Nigeria is seeking to move beyond traditional outsourcing and position itself as a destination for higher-value, AI-enabled global digital services.

The National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, has said the country wants to use its growing technology workforce to capture a larger share of the international market for artificial intelligence-enabled services.

The push is being linked to the Federal Government’s broader Hire From Nigeria initiative, which targets one million export-linked jobs by 2030.

Vice President Kashim Shettima said at the global launch of the programme that Nigeria intends to respond to rising international demand for its talent, with the government estimating current export-linked employment at about 20,000.

The strategy represents a potential shift from Nigeria’s traditional outsourcing model towards services involving artificial intelligence, software, data, digital operations and other higher-value activities.

For Nigeria, the opportunity is not only about technology adoption.

It is also about whether Nigerian workers and companies can earn foreign exchange by supplying digital services to international markets without having to leave the country.

NITDA has said the country must position itself for that transition as AI reshapes the global services industry.

The challenge will be building the skills, reliable power, broadband infrastructure, computing capacity and policy environment required to compete at scale.
