Amaechi: Tinubu Killed My Mother, Blames Drug Costs

Reloaded News Desk

Former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of contributing to the death of his mother, saying he struggled to afford the drugs she needed.

Amaechi made the allegation during an interview in which he spoke about the economic hardship facing Nigerians and the rising cost of healthcare.

According to Amaechi, the difficulty of purchasing medication for his mother became a major concern, leading him to directly blame the Tinubu administration for her death.

“I know people who are 92 years old. Why did my mother not live to 92?” Amaechi was quoted as saying, while linking her death to his difficulty in purchasing the drugs she required.

Amaechi’s mother, Mary Amaechi, died in July 2026 at the age of 89. Her family described her as a woman of faith and a respected matriarch. Reports at the time said she died peacefully.

President Tinubu had subsequently expressed condolences to Amaechi and his family, describing the deceased as a woman whose life reflected faith, sacrifice, kindness and service.

Amaechi’s comments have now brought the circumstances surrounding his mother’s final years back into political debate, particularly against the backdrop of concerns over the rising cost of medicines and healthcare in Nigeria.

The former governor’s claim, however, represents his account of the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death.

The cost and accessibility of medicines have remained significant issues for Nigerian households, particularly those managing long-term illnesses and caring for elderly relatives.

Amaechi, who is now a leading opposition figure, has increasingly criticised the Tinubu administration over its economic policies and their effect on Nigerians.

His latest remarks are likely to intensify the political debate over the impact of the country’s economic situation on access to healthcare and essential medicines.
