Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly to defend Israel’s actions, attack Iran and criticise countries and political figures he accused of opposing Israel.
His appearance on September 24 was marked by a major walkout, with dozens of delegates leaving the chamber as he began speaking.
Netanyahu nevertheless continued his address, with his delegation remaining in the chamber and applauding.
Iran At The Centre
Netanyahu strongly defended Israel’s military action against Iran.
He argued that targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities was necessary to prevent what he described as a threat to Israel and the wider world.
His remarks came one day after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian used the same UN platform to reject US and Israeli accusations against Tehran.
Gaza Dispute
Netanyahu also rejected accusations concerning Israel’s conduct in Gaza.
He defended the actions of the Israeli military and challenged claims made by critics regarding the war and its humanitarian consequences.
The Gaza conflict has become one of the most divisive issues at the UN, with governments sharply divided over Israel’s military campaign, Palestinian statehood and the conduct of the war.
Criticism Of Allies
The Israeli prime minister also criticised countries that he said had failed to support Israel and attacked political figures outside Israel.
His speech therefore extended beyond Iran and Gaza to Israel’s diplomatic relationships with several Western and Middle Eastern countries.
