Vice President Kashim Shettima has joined world leaders at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as the General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly gets underway.
Shettima is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leading Nigeria’s delegation to the high-level gathering.
The Vice President attended a welcome breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for heads of delegation and their spouses before joining other world leaders for the opening of the General Debate.
Shettima is scheduled to present Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate on Thursday.
Nigeria’s participation comes as the UNGA 81 agenda focuses on restoring confidence in multilateral cooperation, sustainable development, peace and security, climate action and reform of international institutions.
Nigeria is also using the gathering to advance its interests on issues including global financial reforms, Africa’s representation in international institutions and greater value addition to the continent’s mineral resources.
The General Debate runs from September 22 to 26 and resumes on September 28.
