NIGERIA’S EXPORT EARNINGS RISE TO $20.08BN AS OIL AND GAS RECEIPTS SURGE

Reloaded News Desk

Nigeria’s export earnings increased to $20.08 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up from $15.56 billion in the first quarter, as crude oil and natural gas exports recorded significant increases.

Crude oil export earnings rose by 15.78 per cent to $9.39 billion, while gas exports increased by 40.15 per cent to $3.63 billion, according to provisional balance-of-payments data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The stronger export performance contributed to a wider current account surplus of $7.54 billion in the second quarter, compared with $4.49 billion in the first quarter.

The figures point to stronger foreign-exchange earnings from Nigeria’s external trade during the period.

The increase also reflects the continuing importance of petroleum exports to Nigeria’s external position, even as the country seeks to expand non-oil exports and increase domestic value addition.

The key question for the wider economy is how effectively higher export earnings translate into stronger external stability, investment and productive economic activity.
