Greenland and Denmark say any future agreement with the United States on Greenland will not compromise the territory’s sovereignty.

The position was reiterated on Saturday amid renewed discussions involving Washington, Copenhagen and Greenland over security and the strategic importance of the Arctic territory.

Denmark and Greenland said any arrangement must respect Greenland’s status and territorial integrity.

The issue has drawn international attention because of Greenland’s strategic location in the Arctic and its growing importance in security and geopolitical competition.

Greenland remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark but has extensive self-government.

The renewed discussions come amid wider efforts by Arctic states and major powers to strengthen their positions in a region increasingly important for defence, shipping and natural resources.
