UNGA 2026: AFRICA MOVES TO TAKE CRITICAL MINERAL’S CASE FOR DISCUSSION

Africa’s critical minerals sector is emerging as a major issue in discussions around the continent’s economic future as world demand grows for minerals needed for clean energy, advanced technology and industrial production.
The continent possesses significant deposits of minerals critical to the global energy transition, including cobalt, copper, lithium, graphite and other strategic resources.
The issue is receiving increased attention around the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where African development, climate finance, industrialisation and the future of global supply chains are among the major issues being discussed.
The United Nations has warned that Africa faces a choice over whether its mineral wealth will continue to be exported largely as raw materials or become a foundation for domestic industrialisation and economic transformation.
For African countries, the debate goes beyond attracting mining investment. It also involves local processing, infrastructure, technology transfer, employment, environmental protection and ensuring that mining communities receive lasting economic benefits.
The growing global competition for critical minerals is increasing the strategic importance of Africa’s mineral resources.
The challenge for African governments is how to turn that growing international demand into stronger domestic industries and broader economic opportunities rather than simply increasing the export of unprocessed minerals.
With African leaders and development institutions gathering around UNGA 81, critical minerals are expected to remain part of the wider conversation about how the continent can secure a greater share of value from its natural resources.
