Nigeria Unlocks 53-Year-Old Gas Resource as $800m Ima Project Reaches Final Investment Decision

Nigeria has reached a major investment milestone in the development of the Ima gas field, with TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited and AMNI announcing Final Investment Decision on a project expected to attract hundreds of millions of dollars in investment.

The Ima gas project, located offshore Nigeria, has remained undeveloped for more than five decades despite the country’s significant gas resources.

The project is expected to produce about 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, providing additional feedstock for Nigeria’s gas and power value chain.

The Presidency described the development as the unlocking of a long-standing national gas resource, saying the project reflects the impact of reforms aimed at improving investment in Nigeria’s energy sector.

The project is expected to generate billions of dollars in value over its productive life, while also creating opportunities for Nigerian companies and workers.

The development comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to increase domestic gas supply to support electricity generation, industrial production and other gas-based businesses.

The Ima FID is also significant because reaching a Final Investment Decision means the project has moved beyond exploration and planning into a committed development phase.

For Nigeria, the bigger issue is whether more of the country’s stranded and undeveloped gas resources can similarly be converted into producing assets.

The country holds some of the world’s largest natural-gas reserves, yet inadequate infrastructure, financing constraints, security concerns and regulatory uncertainty have historically slowed the development of many projects.

The Ima project therefore represents not only a new gas investment but another test of whether Nigeria can turn its large gas reserves into reliable energy supply and industrial value.
