Nigeria has commenced local production of next-generation insecticide-treated mosquito nets as the country moves to strengthen malaria prevention and reduce dependence on imported health products.
The manufacturing facility, operated by Health Textiles Nigeria FZE, is located in the Lagos Free Zone and produces dual-active ingredient insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
The facility is expected to produce about 10 million nets annually when operating at full capacity and create more than 600 jobs.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare described the commencement of local production as an important development in Nigeria’s malaria control efforts and health manufacturing capacity.
The new-generation nets are designed to provide protection against mosquitoes that have developed resistance to some existing insecticides.
Nigeria carries one of the world’s heaviest malaria burdens, making mosquito-net coverage a major component of national malaria prevention efforts.
Local manufacturing could also strengthen supply chains, reduce dependence on imported health commodities and build domestic technical capacity in the production of essential medical and public-health products.
