FG TARGETS LOWER TRANSPORT FARES FROM OCTOBER 1 AS CNG PROGRAMME EXPANDS

The Federal Government says Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs from October 1 as states accelerate the rollout of compressed natural gas and electric public transport systems.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said on Saturday that an implementation committee established under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum was working with states, transport unions, operators and other stakeholders to identify priority routes and deploy appropriate interventions.
The President said Borno already has CNG-powered and electric public transport services operating at between ₦50 and ₦100 on routes where commercial operators charge between ₦300 and ₦600.
He said Edo currently has 50 CNG buses in active service, while Kano has converted more than 1,000 commercial vehicles and is expanding its refueling network.
Delta, Kwara and Lagos are also expanding CNG-supported transport services, while Akwa Ibom has received 50 CNG buses ahead of commercial operations.
Tinubu directed states to maintain momentum ahead of October 1 and ensure that savings from cheaper energy are reflected in the fares paid by commuters.
He said the Federal Government would continue supporting CNG infrastructure, vehicle conversion capacity and private-sector participation.
