US President Donald Trump used his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly to declare that America had regained strength, while defending his administration’s approach to international conflicts, national sovereignty, security and global institutions.
Trump addressed world leaders in New York on September 22, outlining what he described as a stronger American approach to foreign policy.
“America is back, and our country is stronger today than ever before,” Trump said.
The US president placed American sovereignty and national interests at the centre of his address, while criticising what he described as excessive global control and international institutions that, in his view, interfere with national decision-making.
Iran At The Centre
The confrontation with Iran featured prominently in Trump’s address.
He defended US military action against Iran and warned that Washington could take further action if a diplomatic settlement was not reached.
At the same time, Trump indicated that negotiations could still produce an agreement, leaving diplomacy as a possible route out of the confrontation.
His position came a day before Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the General Assembly and directly challenged Washington’s description of Iran.
Ukraine And Russia
Trump also addressed the war between Russia and Ukraine, maintaining that diplomatic efforts could produce an end to the conflict.
The remarks came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought continued international pressure on Russia and continued diplomatic engagement aimed at ending the war.
Trump’s approach places the United States at the centre of several competing diplomatic tracks involving Ukraine, Russia, Iran and European allies.
AI And American Technology
The president also highlighted American leadership in artificial intelligence and technology.
He promoted the concept of “super intelligence” while rejecting what he described as excessive fears surrounding AI regulation.
Trump argued that the United States should retain technological leadership rather than allow international regulation to constrain American innovation.
UN Reform
Trump also criticised the structure and spending of international organisations and called for reforms that would make the United Nations more efficient.
His speech presented a broader argument that countries should retain greater control over their own affairs while cooperating where their interests coincide.
The address reflected the administration’s wider emphasis on sovereignty, military strength, economic power and direct negotiations as instruments of US foreign policy.
Trump’s appearance at the UN came as governments confronted a series of simultaneous crises, including wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, disputes over trade and technology, and growing questions about the effectiveness of existing multilateral institutions.
