Vice-President Kashim Shettima is scheduled to present Nigeria’s national statement at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York today, September 24.
Shettima is representing President Bola Tinubu at the high-level session.
Nigeria’s delegation is expected to use the gathering to advance the country’s positions on international institutional reform, peace and security, development and economic cooperation.
The Nigerian government has said its engagement at the General Assembly will be guided by national interests.
The session brings together leaders and senior representatives from countries around the world at a time of heightened international tensions, including conflicts in the Middle East, renewed fighting in Ethiopia and continuing debates over reform of global institutions.
For Nigeria, the General Assembly also provides an opportunity to address issues affecting Africa’s position in international decision-making.
Nigeria has continued to push for greater African representation in major international institutions, including reform of the United Nations Security Council.
Shettima’s address will therefore be closely watched for the government’s position on global security, economic cooperation, Africa’s representation and Nigeria’s diplomatic priorities.
The Vice-President’s appearance comes as Nigeria also seeks to strengthen international partnerships around investment, trade, energy and development.
The address will provide a clearer indication of the issues the Federal Government is prioritising in its current international engagement.
